Green turtles swim fast. They can zip along at 20 miles (32 km) an hour.

At first, it was touch and go. James Burke kept the turtle dry. He took his temperature daily. He wanted the turtle’s body temperature, or temp, to match the air temp of the room. It took two weeks for that to happen. When it did, James added a little water to the tank. Then he began raising the water temp. He set it two degrees higher each day. At last James got the turtle’s body temp up to 75°F (24°C). That was a nice, healthy temp.

James and his co-workers had to get the turtle eating next. They fed him water plants called algae (sounds like AL-jee). They also fed him a kind of seaweed called bull kelp. They gave the turtle tiny bits at first.

“We were very careful,” says James. “Sea turtles get tossed around in the surf. They get water in their lungs. So they often suffer from pneumonia [sounds like nu-MOAN-yuh.]” That’s a lung sickness. A rescued turtle can seem to get better. Then it can suddenly die of the disease. James had seen it happen.
